Hellas Verona Fans Investigated and Club Fined for Fan Behavior During Napoli Match

On Tuesday, Lega Serie A issued Official Communication No. 20 for the first round of the 2022/23 Serie A campaign contested from August 13-15th. These are the words of Sports Judge Gerardo Mastandrea, assisted by Stefania Ginesio and by the representative of the AIA Carlo Moretti:

[Regarding] Hellas Verona-Napoli, the Sports Judge, having read the report of the collaborators of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, considers it necessary that it be investigated, by the same Federal Prosecutor, having heard, if necessary, also the heads of public order, the sub-sectors of the South Curve, where identifiable, from which the first choirs of racial discrimination began against a player of the Napoli Soc. after the realization of a goal.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen was reportedly subjected to racist chants from a portion of the South Curve, which was not the first time in Verona. Osimhen was also racially abused by Hellas Verona fans when Napoli visited the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi last season. Osimhen exacted his revenge by scoring Napoli’s second goal of the match and celebrated by making making a gesture to the Verona faithful as if to say, “keep crying.”

In addition to the investigation, Hellas Verona were also fined a total of €15,000 due to fan bahavior:

A €12,000 fine to Soc. Hellas Verona for its supporters, during the match, repeatedly chanting insulting choruses of territorial origin towards the supporters of the opposing team.

A €3,000 fine to Soc. Hellas Verona for its supporters throwing objects onto the playing surface during the match; attenuated exemption pursuant to art. 29, paragraph 1 letter. b) CGS.
