Napoli Face Sanctions for Alleged Racial Chants

On Thursday, Lega Serie A issued Official Communication No. 111 for the 17th round matches of the 2022/23 Serie A campaign contested the 4th of January. These are the words of Sports Judge Gerardo Mastandrea, assisted by Stefania Ginesio and by the representative of the AIA Carlo Moretti:

The sports judge, having read the report of the collaborators of the federal prosecutor’s office, deems it necessary for the same federal prosecutor’s office to specify, after further consultation, if necessary, with those responsible for public order, which are the sectors they usually occupy mainly, in competitions at home, the Napoli supporters positioned in the “third blue ring” sector, authors of the chants of racial discrimination against the international player Lukaku.

If the racial chants are confirmed, SSC Napoli could be faced with a closure of the curva for the next home match, which happens to be against Juventus – the same penalty imposed on SS Lazio after traveling fans made racial chants towards Lecce’s Lameck Banda and Samuel Umtiti.

Napoli supporters denied the allegations, posting videos on social media showing that the traveling Napoli fans were in fact chanting “Kim, Kim, Kim, Kim” in support of central defender Kim Min-jae.
