Two Wins in Two for Napoli Femminile!

Adriana Gomes scored her first goal of the Serie B campaign in a dominant 1-0 victory over Apulia Trani in the pouring rain at Stadio Giuseppe Piccolo.

Dimitri Lipoff made two changes to the squad he fielded against AFC Trento in the opening match of the season. Antonia Dulcic shifted to the right, starting over Eleonora Oliva at right back, while Aurora De Sanctis started at left back.

Meanwhile, Giulia Ferrandi started in the centre of the midfield, with Lucia Strisciuglio to her left and Sara Tui to her right, relegating Michela Franco to the bench.

Two matches into the season and Dimitri Lipoff’s Napoli already have a clear identity. They play out of the back, they press high and they play short corner kicks.

Despite the scoreline, Napoli dominated the match from start to finish. It didn’t take long for the Partenopee to open the scoring. Only six minutes into the match, Adriana Gomes scored her first of the Serie B campaign and her third in all competitions. The Napoli striker slotted a shot into the bottom corner after a lovely exchange of passes between Romina Pinna and Giulia Ferrandi.

Pinna came close to doubling Napoli’s lead five minutes later. Gomes made a lovely dribble on the left wing before teeing up the winger, but her shot was well-stopped by Apulia goalkeeper Bianca Raicu.

Napoli came close again midway through the first half. Pinna cut the ball back to De Sanctis, who’s low shot was heading wide of the goal, but Serena Landa nearly tapped the ball in at the far post.

Apulia, who are coached by former Napoli coach Alessandro Pistolesi, struggled to create anything in the attack. Lipoff’s team proved that sometimes the best defence is a good offence.  Napoli created chance after chance, and though they didn’t convert any, Apulia had very little of the ball.

In the end, Gomes’ goal was enough for the Partenopee to earn a deserved 1-0 victory – Napoli’s second consecutive victory in Serie B and and third consecutive victory in all competitions.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t all positive for the Femminile. In the 33rd minute, Lipoff was forced to replace Strisciuglio with Claudia Mauri after the former pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Napoli will be back in action on October 2nd to take on Chievo Verona Women, who have also started the season with two wins.
