Napoli-Inter Match Preview

Inter visit the Maradona on Sunday, riding high from their victory over Milan in the Champions League Semi-finals. Meanwhile, Napoli look to beat the only team in the league they’ve yet to win against this season, though recent history suggests that that will be no easy feat.

SSC Napoli

Though the defeat against Monza was only their fourth league defeat of the season, Napoli have only two victories in their last eight matches in all competitions. One of those league defeats was against Inter, who remain the only club in the league that Napoli have not beaten this season.

Having clinched their third league title on Matchday 33, Napoli have had little left to play for. For that reason, Luciano Spalletti has rotated his squad, making at least five changes in each of Napoli’s two matches since clinching the league title. However, with an in-form Inter side visiting the Maradona, Spalletti is expected to start his best XI.

Inter Milan

Inter will be riding high after eliminating city rivals AC Milan to advance to the final of the Champions League.  The Nerazzurri are in fine form, having won eight consecutive matches in all competitions, including victories for very difficult competition. Inter defeated Lazio, Roma and an in-form Sassuolo in the league. They beat Juventus in the second leg of their Coppa Italia Semi-final tie (after drawing the first leg). Most impressively, they beat Milan in both legs of their Champions League Semi-final tie.

That run has coincided with Lu-La finding its form. Lautaro Martinez netted six times in his last five league matches, to go along with two assists.  Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku has scored five goals and three assists in his last four league matches.

Though top four in the league is not guaranteed, Inter could potentially win two cups this season. The Nerazzurri will square off against Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia Final on Wednesday before meeting Manchester City in the Champions League Final on June 10th.  With such a busy schedule, Simone Inzaghi will have no choice but to rotate his squad, though that hasn’t been an issue in recent weeks.

Injuries/Suspensions

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is questionable after suffering a blunt force trauma in training on Thursday. Mario Rui will return to the squad after completing the full group training sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

For Inter, Milan Skriniar remains sidelined with a fractured vertebra. Meanwhile, Henrik Mkhitaryan exited the return leg against Milan in the Champions League with a Hamstring injury.

Manager’s Comments

Luciano Spalletti:
“We still have a lot of stimuli, we are like that. The players who have chosen the club were chosen well, they all have iron discipline within them. It doesn’t matter if you call them to be coached. The most stimulating thing, in addition to the fact that Inter are deserving finalists in the Champions League, is that we have beaten every team in the league and Inter is the only one missing. It is certainly stimulating.”
