Kvaratskhelia Completes the Comeback as Napoli Defeat Lazio 2-1

After conceding an early goal, two of Napoli’s newcomers, Kim Min-jae and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, scored for Napoli to secure all three points.

Mattia Zaccagni opened the scoring only four minutes into the match, curling a low shot around Alex Meret to ignite the crowd at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Napoli responded well, controlling the run of play, while Lazio sat back and defended in a compact mid block.

Kim Min-jae equalized in the 38th minute from a corner kick, as was confirmed by the goal line technology.

The South Korean’s second of the season came moments after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s powerful strike from outside the area crashed into the upright and stayed out. Once again, Kvara was Napoli’s brightest player.

Napoli continued to push in the second half. Victor Osimhen watched his header bounce into the upright, while Kvaratskhelia miss two chances from point blank range – the first was stopped by Ivan Provedel while the second sailed over the bar.

The Azzurri persisted and we’re awarded for their positive play just past the hour mark. Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa cut the ball back to Kvaratskhelia at the edge of the area and the Georgian smashed in his fourth goal of the campaign.

Maurizio Sarri resorted to his bench to seek out an equalizer but Napoli resisted the late pressure to earn a deserved 2-1 victory. With the win, Napoli moved back to the top of the table, with Atalanta and Roma still to play.

Napoli will be back in action on Wednesday to kick off their 2022/23 Champions League campaign against Liverpool.
