Brenden Aaronson, Rodrigo Moreno and Jack Harrison scored as Leeds United FC coasted to a 3-0 victory over Chelsea FC at Elland Road on Sunday.
Koulibaly was not directly at fault for any of the goals but struggled to keep pace with Leeds’ wingers.
Moments after Koulibaly’s Senegalese compatriot Edouard Mendy gifted a goal to American Brenden Aaronson, the central defender nearly got himself sent off.
Koulibaly was late with a tackle on Daniel James and was somewhat fortunate match official Stuart Atwell kept his book in his pocket. Moments later, Rodrigo Moreno scored his fourth of the 2022/23 campaign from a well executed set piece.
There was no avoiding a second yellow in the 84th minute, with Chelsea down 3-0. After conceding possession and then nearly colliding with teammate Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Koulibaly hauled down substitute Joe Gelhardt to stop the Leeds attack.
As a result, Koulibaly will sit out next Chelsea’s third round fixture against Leicester City.
